After the closure of all servers on 31 January 2027 by MMORPG, New World (New World), under the banner of Amazon Gomes, and as the news settles, many people are expected to survive as Rust Developer Facepunch Facepunch’s chief operator and director of the company, Alistair McFarlane, expressed his willingness to buy New World with $25 million, stating that “The game should not go to death” and sparking debate between industry and players.
Amazon announced three months ago that New World had stopped introducing new content, while secretly cancelling the ongoing MMO project. In recent days, New World has been added from the digital store, confirming that new players will no longer be able to purchase the game, except for existing players who continue to play before the server closes.
For a large, multi-person online game, “Closed clothes” means the virtual world that millions of players have built together, with social memories of the association and people running for a long time on the server.
New World’s update last October showed a warming trend, even though it did not grow as fast as Amazon expected that a number of players were still hopeful about the future of the original, and that communities were beginning to discuss the possibility of the game going on, as in the case of City of Heroes.
The MMORPG City of Heroes, developed by Crystal Studios, was shut down by NCSoft in 2012 and the player set up a private service until 2024, when one of the servers, Homecoming, was officially authorized to be a rare case of MMO success.
This time, New World may have a different turn, with McFarlane publicly claiming to be willing to offer a final purchase price of $25 million, with some sense of humor, but also reflecting his position on the issue of game preservation.
Simon Collins-Laflame, a developer who successfully bought Hytale from Riot and re-emerged, also expressed his willingness to assist if there was a need for “a proposal to buy cancelled games”.
The formal takeover by professional game companies is, of course, more desirable than the private or unofficial way in which the new MOBA was sold to Ubisoft, along with the Monterrey development team, during the recent mass layoffs.
However, the situation in New World is even more difficult, as most of its core development team has been disbanded and subsequent operations will have to be re-engineered.
In addition, unlike sandbox games such as Rust, which are central to the development of the development of the theme park, even if Facepunch is authorized, a small team is needed to maintain the system on a regular basis and to introduce new content in order to keep the game alive, at no cost or challenge.
